Two ends of the spectrum
This week I watched two Hindi movies that fall under two ends of a broad spectrum . One was a mockery of a classic whereas another was a beautiful reminder of other classics's in the same genre.
The first one, I think you would have guessed by now (If you have been following the news on who has been remaking what in bollywood..)...It is none other than "RamGopal Varma ki Aag"....Ramu seems to have remarked that he is awed by Sholay and always wanted to remake it...Well Mr.Ramu, did you want to remake it or degrade it? I have never seen a more pathetic movie in my life ...In my opinion, even a cheesy Yash Chopra flick would been better "paisa vasool"....Every single actor in the movie was a caricature of the original Sholay...
Ajay Devgan(Heeroo) - horribly miscast , lame attempt at comedy (Veeru )
Prashant Raj(Raj) - Stone faced and expressionless(Jai)
Mohanlal(Narasimha)- brilliant actor, the only saving grace of this miserable melodrama( Thakur)
Sushmita Sen(Durga Devi) - she looked more of a ghost and less like a widow(Radha in the original)
Nisha Kothari(Gungroo) - Was praying to God that she just shuts her BIG mouth! ( Basanti) - She is now at the top of my bollywood hate list and has displaced himesh to the second spot!
Amitabh Bachan(Babban) - The worst villain to grace our screens, I mean I have never seen a villain trying to dig his nose in a fearsome manner( Gabbar Singh)
Ramu has tried to be a little creative by doing away with the coin-tossing sequences from the original(rocket scientist Ramu...these scenes could have been a solace), by cutting Narasimha's fingers instead of his hands(then how did he throw the knife in the last scene?) , by taking away the intensity of the scene where the blind man's son is murdered, by dressing up urmila in sleazy "B-grade"style, by creating Big-B's character as a mix of multiple villains -Gabbar, Osama, and our neighbourhood "bhoochandee"....Way to Go Ramu....If you continue to keep making movies like this I am sure in a few years you will be termed "extinct" in the film world...
Anyways, take my word people..Please don't commit the sin of watching this movie.....
And then to recover from this trauma I decided to watch "Khosla ka Ghosla" which I wanted to watch a few months back(based on the reviews), but never got the time to....
What a brilliant movie about a middle class father's struggles to buy his dream home...I loved the movie and the performances were brilliant. Anupam Kher rocked as KK.Khosla, Boman Irani was sneaky as the cruel Khurana, Ranvir shorey hilarious as the Elder son, Parvin dabbas and Tara sharma subtle in their respective roles.... This movie reminded me of the yesteryear classic comedies like "Chupke Chupke", "Golmaal" etc...What a refreshing movie...My recommendation to all...Please grab a dvd of this one...! It is great!
